Mauro Cerqueira and Julia Spínola’s work may be overall considered as notes or sketches on the unforeseen. It wanders around randomness and its own limits, chance and permanence, certainty and unconsciousness.
Although the artists’ backgrounds are to be found in opposite methods, their conclusions land on the same level: they side against the elitarian referential codes, proper to an expert’s hermetic speech, and dig into a fault that, owing to its own crevices, opens spaces of discontinuity versus uninterrupted and the humdrum.
Topics like lightness, weight, tension, balance, resistance, the act of rubbing and the unexpected emerge from the use of clippings, sandpaper, gloves, knives, blinds and other common objects that convey extremely different concepts like ears, feet, vertigo, castaways and bindweed, building a whole field of unusual meanings and aesthetics.
