Otto Zitko (2002), installation view.

Born in 1959 in Linz, Austria. Otto Zitko studies at the Higher School of Applied Arts, with Peter Weibel. In the 1980s, he was part of the group of emerging Viennese artists, along with Herbert Brandl and Franz West, among others, who sought a new self-definition by differentiating themselves from the powerful Viennese actionism of the 1960s. Initially starting from wild expressionism, Zitko radically changed in the late 1980s, replacing the traditional canvas support with materials such as glass and aluminium. The line will be defined as the unique element of his painting; “It’s a long way from the line”, as the title of one of his works from 1987 indicates.
The concept of the drawn gesture breaks the frame format and is applied more and more in entire spaces. In his interventions, the walls become works of art. An antagonism develops between the lines, since there is no specific point of concentration. The viewer has to move within the space to grasp the meaning of the contradictory elements. The endless circles define the architectural space and at the same time intersect it with immediate determination.

This exhibition is the first individual exhibition at Otto Zitko in Spain. The installation was conceived directly for the Gallery space. It is accompanied by drawings on aluminum and on paper from 1999 to 2002.
