Biography

Ulrich Wulff (Kempten/Allgäu, 1975) lives and works in Görlitz (Germany).

Wulff’s works operate from sensation and expression. They possess an ironic, light, playful quality, where geometry helps to visualize an empathetic dialogue between line and surface.
His paintings are neither symbols nor geometric forms, yet they do question certain dynamics of time or systems of proportion and scale. Everything is the same in his paintings: there is no distinction between pictorial lines and clearly contoured fields of color. And although line and color appear different to our eyes, their inner being forms a complete unity. The line expands and acts as a field of color, while the flat color is realized through the contrasting tones that surround and define it.

Wulff does not think in terms of themes or series or individual motifs. His theoretical concerns are directly linked to the intuitive development of the surface. His painting has much more to do with a new sensibility capable of expressing itself autonomously on certain pictorial truths than with the formalization of specific geometries. These are flat surfaces connected to the human experience; here, the plane, the surface, contains a lived experience conditioned by the pictorial field.
