Forty years of German art in Madrid.

Founded in Madrid in 1980, the Heinrich Ehrhardt Gallery opened with an inaugural exhibition of Cy Twombly and subsequently developed a programme focusing on post-war German artists such as Imi Knoebel, Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Jörg Immendorf and his disciples Markus Oehlen and Werner Büttner.

In 1985, the gallery changed its location and name, moving to Frankfurt and becoming associated with Bärbel Grässlin. The list of artists it represented increased to include names such as Dan Flavin, Blinky Palermo and Ulrich Rückriem, alongside a new generation of emerging German artists such as Günther Förg, Helmut Dorner, Georg Herold, Martin Kippenberger, Reinhard Mucha, Franz West and Herbert Brandl.

In the mid-90s, Heinrich Ehrhardt spent several years exclusively representing the artists Dan Flavin and Ulrich Rückriem, realising public art projects in collaboration with architects and urban planners and organising exhibitions in major European museums.

Since reopening in Madrid in 1998, the gallery’s programme has added new and emerging artists from Germany and Spain, including André Butzer, Björn Dahlem, Thilo Heinzmann, Tobias Rehberger, Thomas Zipp and Secundino Hernández. After the incorporation of Pablo Flórez as director of the gallery in 2009, the new Spanish and Portuguese art scene began to form a key part of the gallery’s programming.

From 2022, the gallery has been renamed Ehrhardt Flórez and, while maintaining its previous programme and history, presents a combination of new generations and schools as a fundamental part of its activity. Together with all the names mentioned above, artists such as Julia Spínola, Fernando García, Mauro Cerqueira, Guillermo Pfaff, Kiko Pérez, Rosa Tharrats, Gonçalo Sena, June Crespo, Peppi Bottrop, Laia Estruch and Jan Zöller now mark the present and the future of the gallery.
